The Game of Balance
The following board game can be played at home or in a congregational setting. It was
designed for teens and adults and from two to ten players. The game may be played in an
open-ended format or a time limit may be set. Questions for discussion are included for
use afterwards.
Equipment:
- Game board
- Place markers
- Spirit point tokens
- Dollar tokens
- Hour tokens
- One die
Preparation:
- Photocopy one token sheet for each player and a sufficient reserve for the bank. Cut
out Spirit, Dollar, and Hour tokens. To make tokens more durable, you can glue them
to a sheet of cardboard before cutting them apart.
- Cut out Balance Cards.
- Cut out place markers. To make them easier to move, backed them with cardboard or
tape them onto coins.
To begin play:
Place Balance Cards face down in the center of the board. Each player is provided
with one place marker to represent that player on the board as well as 100 Spirit points,
100 Dollars, and 100 Hours. One player is designated Treasurer. The Treasurer will
receive and distribute all Spirit Points, Dollars, and Hours throughout play.
Roll for who goes first. All players place their markers on the Day of Reckoning square
but take no action on that square. The first player rolls the die and moves clockwise the
designated number of squares. After performing the action designated by the square play
passes to the left. Play continues until only one player remains or until a designated time
limit is reached.
Scoring for time limit game:
At the end of the time limit, all players add up their Spirit, Dollar, and Hour points.
The player with the highest total point score is the winner.
Rules:
- All moves are made in a clockwise direction.
- When a player lands on a square marked by a Balance he or she chooses a
card from the Balance Card pile in the center of the board and performs the action
specified. The card is replaced at the bottom of the pile.
- When a player lands on a green square with a Spirit, Dollar, or Hour
designation he or she re-rolls the die. That number is multiplied by the multiplier
designated on the square. The player receives the resultant number of points from the
treasury. For example, if a player lands on a green square with wings (the Spirit
designator) and the symbol x10, that player then rolls the die. If the number rolled
was 4 the player receives 40 Spirit points (4x10).
- When a player lands on a red square with a Spirit, Dollar, or Hour
designation he or she re-rolls the die. That number is multiplied by the multiplier
designated on the square. The player pays the resultant number of points to the
Treasury. For example, if a player lands on a red square with a clock (the Hour
designator) and the symbol x2, that player then rolls the die. If the number rolled was
6 the player pays 12 hour points (6x2).
- When a player lands on the Day of Reckoning square that player counts his
or her points in each category. If any category exceeds any other by three times or
more the player must rebalance their life by surrendering half of the points in their
largest category. For example if a player holds 100 Spirit points, 200 Dollars, and 300
Hours they must surrender 150 Hours since they hold more than three times as many
Hours as Spirit points. If the player holds 100 Spirit points, 300 Dollars, and 400
Hours they must surrender 150 Dollars and 200 Hours since both are more than three
times greater than the number of Spirit points.
- A player who loses all their points in any one category — Spirit points, Dollars, or
Hours — is eliminated from the game.
Advanced Game Options: Leaders or players may opt to use some or all of these
advanced rules.
- A player may swap points with the Treasury at a three-to-one exchange rate. For
instance, a player in danger of going bankrupt in dollars may exchange 300 Spirit
points for $100.
- Prior to the start of the game each player declares which category -- Spirit points,
Dollars, or Hours -- is most important in their life balance. Add the four optional
Balance Cards that direct a player to add or subtract points from their chosen
category.
- When players have declared their preferred category before the start of play, the game
may be declared ended when one player has accumulated 400 or more points in their
chosen category and that category has at least twice as many points as either
remaining category.
Questions for discussion:
- Is the linking of time, money, and spirit a realistic one?
- Sometimes when we consider either the price or benefit of a particular choice we are
not able to see all the aspects. Can you think of an experience in your life when you
made a choice that had a hidden cost or payoff?
- Is it more important to you to balance your resources of time, money, and spirit
equally or to give priority to one?
- How do you set priorities and make choices considering these resources? Are there
other resources that need to be considered? How about health? Environmental
impact? Others?
- How did you feel having the choices taken away from you by the game?
